EnergySmart Schools

By NancyB · Comments (0)
Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Green Energy News LogoEnergySmart Schools mean healthier children and teachers – and a healthy planet. They also save money for America’s school districts.

Why EnergySmart Schools?

  • Schools spend more on energy than any other expense except personnel.
  • A high-performance school doesn’t have to cost more to construct than a conventionally built school.
  • High-performance schools can lower a school district’s operating costs by up to 30%.
  • Energy is one of the few expenses a school can reduce without sacrificing educational quality.
  • Schools are central to the communities they serve and should reflect community values – like energy and resource conservation.
  • Schools are a great place to teach the nation’s children about energy and resource conservation.

Exploring Ways to Use Wind Energy

    By NancyB · Comments (0)
    Monday, March 1st, 2010

wind IconWe have harnessed the wind’s energy for hundreds of years—from windmills that pump water or grind grain to today’s wind turbines that generate electricity.

If you live on at least one acre of land with an ample wind resource, you can generate your own electricity using a small wind electric system. You can also use a small wind turbine for pumping water.

You may have the opportunity now or in the future to buy clean electricity from a wind power plant.

Exploring Ways to Use Solar Energy

    By NancyB · Comments (0)
    Monday, March 1st, 2010

solar iconStep outside on a hot, sunny day, and you’ll experience the power of the sun’s heat and the light. That’s solar energy.

You can use solar energy to do the following:

    • Heat your home through passive solar design or an active solar heating system
    • Generate your own electricity
    • Heat water in your home or swimming pool
    • Light your home both indoors and outdoors
    • Dry your clothes. Use a clothesline to reduce the energy consumed by your clothes dryer.

To enable your use of solar energy for these purposes, your community may have established solar access planning guidelines and/or ordinances.

If you live in the southwestern United States, you may even have the opportunity now or in the future to buy clean electricity from a concentrating solar power plant.
